What an impassioned plea from Paul to Timothy.  This letter exposes so much of what was going on at the time (and today).  Many people were teaching things that weren’t true, telling fables, and leading people astray.  These same people were using there “powers of persuasion” to take advantage of people, financially, sexually, you name it.

Paul warns Timothy to be on guard against such men and to hold to the sound doctrine and to stay faithful to the true gospel that had been entrusted to him.

There is also a strong theme of suffering and persecution.  Paul paints the picture that those who live for Christ must also die for him.  That the suffering endured in this life pays great dividends “on that day”.

Finally, I love that Paul charges Timothy to always hold the scriptures high, that they are “God-breathed” and are “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
