Was thinking about all of the debate that is taking place these days between the Reformed crowd (a broad spectrum I know) and the Pomo crowd (another large swath) and their differing hermeneutics (methods of interpreting scripture). Particularly, I find it interesting how one crowd holds to a “high view of scripture and preaching”, focusing on the core message of the gospel: sin, judgement, substitutionary atonement, resurrection; while the other crowd seems to key in on the social implications of the gospel and an almost subversive movement of Kingdom agents at work in the earth today. It would seem that there necessarily needs to be a blending of these two.
Nonetheless, here are some key themes I picked up on in 1 Timothy:
- Teaching, instruction and doctrine - these are practical, necessary components in the life of a believer and in the practice of any church to motivate people to live godly lives, free of legalistic entanglements, fulfilling Christ’s law through generosity, submission to one another and a refusal to enter into contentious debates.
- Church administration - I think it is easy to get hung up on what appears to be a treatise on governance, and miss the point that those who aren’t committed to living the truth of the gospel (vs. merely speaking it) should not be in a position of influence.
- Faith & Grace - ultimately, Paul always points Timothy back to the key ingredients, those things that are given by God that allow us to chase after godliness.
